Barriers for learning

When we open our eyes, we are told, hey you can’t do this, you are too young, or hey you cannot handle this, you are not the right age. Cant, cant cant, means from the very early age we start encountering barriers. They try to lock your brains with limitation and turn you into a robot that is programmed to do things. I am here to prove, that barriers do not really exist for a keen learner. Now what barriers do, they limit your power of imagination, they forcefully instill limitations in your mind, and they direct your energies to look at your in-capabilities instead of channelizing your energies towards your capabilities and in the end you really start believing it and do not even bother to try.
When I was young, I also encountered these barriers, not from my parents but from other people. I remember one of my relatives said it to my parents, why do you let her use internet, it’s dangerous and she will get addicted to it. Little did they know that I was using computer for learning and it was because of computer I managed to learn many things.
So in a sense sticking to your ideas, really help. I remember once taking an online course, I posted some of my thoughts on a forum and a 51 year old guy said it to me, “You know we do not want to answer you because you are a 12 year old annoying girl trying to be Leonardo da Vinci, Instead you should play with puppets.” For a moment I thought, hey that’s really mean and harsh thing to say but later I thought “Oh wow he is relating me to Leonardo da Vinci, now isn’t it cool.” So I responded him and said, “Well thanks and yes I like Leonardo da Vinci.” Now that’s another thing he later apologized.
So I mean to say I was unaffected by his response which was trying to tell me, I should not speak my mind because I am 12 and I should not be in that class because of my age, so I instead focused on the other part of his sentence, you know the good part which was more amusing for me.
Learning has no age limit, you can learn any time you want, it does not matter how old you are or how young you are, you should have the courage to face these barriers and cross them. Learning is oxygen to your brain which actually keeps you young and alive. People will stop you, patronize you but if you are passionate about learning, no one can stop you.
Now learning does not mean that you learn only the subjects you are taught in school, learning means anything which interests you, learning is not at all about getting a degree.
Now there are many kind of barriers, one is age limit as I told you but there is another one too which is gender oriented, for example, hey you are a girl and girls shouldn’t do it. There is another one; hello behave like a girl OK, or girls do not have the brains to study science etc etc. I would just like to tell all of them, girls can achieve anything, they can be good at anything, they have the equal opportunity to educate themselves so I will not take your sympathies by showing the weaker side of girls that: “Oh we do not have the equal right to get education, I would rather show you how strong a girl can be if she really decides to get education.”
There is another thing which comes under the same category, it’s the cult of too much seriousness in learning, I mean you got to be some kind of zombie with a stern look of seriousness on your face if you need to learn something, “pay attention and be serious is all I hear” and “Can’t you see we are trying to learn something here,” I want to tell them, people learn more in friendly and open environment, restricted learning produce restricted thinking.

Now there is another barrier which you have probably never heard before and it affected me and many others. It’s called “banana barrier” which our government has slapped on us, the same govt which always claims to be the champion of promoting education and that barrier is banning our access to get knowledge from internet. Where our world is evolving with nonstop changing technologies, learning is also evolving; we need “SOME THING MORE!” Something more to learn from and here we are facing an issue which needs to be highlighted. It is YouTube ban, you all know it is banned in Pakistan and thus limiting our fundamental right to access “learning materials”. Now the most important question arises, how on earth we can convince our government to lift the ban who has perceived banning is the only solution. Who will tell the “GENIUS “behind this decision that we are endangering the future of our own youth by playing into the hands of those people who have actually have “no desire to learn or have stopped learning long ago”.
Ironic isn’t it but sadly that’s the way it goes. Who would know the impact of this ban better than those who suffer from it? While students of all over the world are enjoying learning but we are forced to seek less revolutionary ways to study. I hope one day some better sense prevails and this ban is removed because learning is an ongoing process, it is not only fast ,it is changing too .Every day some new physics theories are made ,some new experiments are conducted .We can be a part of it ,we can follow the change. Learning needs not to be “difficult” it can be fun and we can enjoy it. Knowledge has to be passed on and now there are easier and simpler ways to pass it on. So why creating barriers in our path, why not facilitate it. The best gift any one can give to their nation is the gift of “free and easy education” and we shall get it by crossing these barriers because we are not robots, we have brain and the will to succeed. Barriers are proposed by people who underestimate the power of human mind. They thrive on the fears of others. Let no one intimidate you by pointing at your errors because making mistake is the first step of learning,  hold on to your dreams because your dreams can turn into a reality and change the world. This has happened before and it can happen again and that’s the only way which can make you survive. We should refuse to accept these barriers and the people who created it, there is no barrier which cannot be crossed and remember it’s you who has to do it; it’s only you who can help yourself grow.

  2. Hi, Khadija, I’m Veronica from Udacity.

Yes, you are So right, “Learning is Oxygen to our brain”, once we stop learning, our brain will deteriorate and will eventually ‘die’, which mean we can no longer use our brain anymore. Nothing can stop us from learning if we really want to. There are no limits, not age, not gender...etc. No matter who you are, you can always learn. That’s why I love Udacity, and the way they teach, it’s a free platform for anyone and everyone to learn, as long as they Want to learn! (I first know about Udacity in a Time Magazine article, actually You were on that article too, and I immediately sign up for Udacity).

I’d also encountered this type of barrier when I was younger, I often ask some difficult questions on things around me out of curiosity and my parents answers often are: “I will tell you when you get into collage”, which mean I was too young to ask that question. Why didn’t they try to explain for me to understand?

I definitely agree on all the things you say on this post. Thumbs up!

And by the way, you did a Brilliant job on responding “Thank you” to the guy that say you’re trying to be Da Vinci!

    1. You are right, I love Udacity too, still doing algebra course. I am so happy that you shared your personal experience and I am sure you have learned from it. Our next generation will not suffer due to these stereotype behaviours because we pledge to be different from them.:)) thanks for your response. I am sure we have lot to learn from each other.

    2. Yes, I do believe that we have a lot of things to learn from each other, since we came from two different world... and there are many things in this world waiting for us to learn. What we should do is learn as much as possible, so that we can teach our next generation better than the way we were taught.

Waiting for your next post, I do enjoy reading it! :)

    3. Yes, I am happy that we share the same interest. And I bet you will be someone great. Yes the more we learn, the more the next generation learns because we will be their guiding light.
Looking forward to speak to you again.

  3. Hi Khadija,

Hmm… it seems that my wish of being the first one to comment on this nice article has poped like a bubble…sorry for being a bit late...been busying joining a coursera class But anyway, it is a nice article and I really enjoy reading it.

Here is a little of my opinion:

(I know it’s a bit long, coz I’ve got many things to say, so please bear with me. :))

(I think)These barriers exist, it’s exist for everyone, and it’s almost impossible to completely eliminate it.

Let’s metaphorize education as an epic journey, in which there are beautiful and exciting things at our destination, and we could think of these barriers as the obstacle and difficulty that we would encounter along the way.

These obstacle had been always there, and due to these barrier, I believe, many people had given up on their way.
And therefore, as we know that this barrier are inevitable, I think we should, rather then fearing or being angry about it, face it courageously.

I utterly agree with you, “learning is oxygen to our brain”. It keep our brain alive.
Our brain, like any other part of our body, need energy and exercise. For our brain, “food” are knowledge, which we consume it by mean of learning. As for exercise, it is the usage of the knowledge that we had obtain, in other word, thinking.
Simply put, we need to keep our mind active, otherwise our brain would be weaken in similar way that the rest of our body would when they are deprived of food and exercise.

Now that we have a strong brain and a good altitude of learning (which I have no doubt you have got. And by the way, you’ve got a bright and lively spirit too, as the Da Vinci incident has demonstrated.) we could easily overcome any barrier that we would meet on the journey. And although we may not be able to reach our destination (as we know that it’s impossible to use the maximum capacity of our brain) we could probably make the best out of it.

So let’s hope that these barriers are getting less and less, so that we could learn more and more things.

Looking forward to see your next post.

    1. Thx so much Jon. It doesn't matter if you post first or last, at least you agree with me. Though I think we can eliminate barriers because nothing is impossible.

It was a very good example, you know the epic journey one. It is a very beautiful example.

If you don't learn, your brain will be hungry (lolzz but really). And when something is hungry, it doesn't work properly.

Actually we only use, I guess 4%, or was it 3% of our brain. The rest is not used. We should learn how to use our brain as a whole.

Barriers also wear out because nothing lasts forever. :)

P.S. Thanks, my profile pic is a fairy :). I am also fascinated by fairies. I love to read fantasy. :D

    2. Hi Fairy Khadija,

Yes. Nothing is impossible, the world are ever changing, in fact, as a wise man once said, the only constant is change. So one day, (hopefully) we’ll live in a world where nothing will stand in the path between us and where we wanted to go.
It seem that your optimism had been partially fulfilled, these barrier are fading, if we are to compare with, for instance, several decades ago, then it had been greatly lessened, so as the trend go, these barrier would probably, reduced to non-existence - your are right, nothing last for ever.

As for the brain capacity, I’d just done some research on the internet, and found a rather surprising result; I will start from the beginning.
Although it was me who had suggested, in the last post, that we are impossible to use the full capacity of our brain, after pondering over it a bit, I realize that there is a flaw in the argument, it go against the theory of evolution, as merely using a small portion of our brain would not enhance our chance of survival at all!
With this, I get online and check it out, here is one of the article that I found:

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ten_percent_of_brain_myth

It’s an article from Wikipedia that claim that we are using 100% of our entire brain! And that the popular surmise that we only use ten percent of our brain are only a myth. They had listed a list of evident that seem to proved that it’s truth. So go and check it out! And see what you think.

It is nice to talk with you:)

  4. Wow! This is really Interesting!
The Wiki article is very surprising! I always thought that we only use a small potion of our brain's capacity. It ends up that it's just a popular misconception!

I think among the list of evident that they provide, the evolution one is the most convincing, because the process of natural selection would have eliminated the inefficient brains, not sparing it and taking 20% of the nutrient that the body obtain if it's useless.

It's very nice for Jon to provide such knowledge to us! Thanks Jon! :)

    1. Hi Veronica,

I’m really sorry for my very late reply. I just saw your comment. I’d been rather busy recently.

Yes, the fact that we actually used our entire brain was indeed surprising. I had always thought that we only used a very small portion of it and that those who able to utilise a relatively larger part of their brain would have considerably greater brain capacity and intelligent. However, the evident that are listed in the article make me felt sure that this is not true.

I think we should always question and rethink popular believes that are fell short of scientific confirmation.

I totally agree with the above article.
In my perspective, the senior instructor is an experienced educator and a lifelong learner.
Nowadays, in Poland there is a tendency to make the aging teachers redundant.
I think, they make the mistake. Experience plus competence, as well as knowledge, creates excellent educators.
